The village of medieval origin stands on a hill of magmatic rock in the north of the province of Grosseto, overlooking the Grosseto plain as far as the sea on one side and the Sienese and Amiata mountainsides on the other. Inside the old village the narrow streets go up and down the slopes of the hill, until you reach the old 13th century church of San Niccolò. Just outside the old village is the small Teatro dei Concordi.
The territory of Roccastrada, which is vast and heterogeneous, offers many opportunities to experience and get to know the real Tuscan Maremma.
There are many food and wine routes along the Monteregio DOC wine roads. Wineries, oil mills and restaurants of all kinds where you can get to know and appreciate the products and typical cuisine of the Maremma. In an area such as Roccastrada, the Museum of the Vine and Wine could not fail to testify to and underline the tradition and culture of the place. For true nature lovers, there are plenty of routes to discover on foot, horseback or mountain bike.
There are 120 kilometres of trekking in Roccastrada. One of the most fascinating is undoubtedly the one that leads to the Farma River waterfalls within the Nature Reserve that extends between the municipalities of Monticiano and Roccastrada.
The municipality is rich in castles, towers and fortified villages, such as Montemassi, Sassofortino, Roccatederighi, Torniella and Sticciano, each with its own typical features, but all united by a common denominator: the splendid view of the Maremma, often including the sea and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, combined with the genuineness and hospitality of its inhabitants.
Roccastrada is also part of the municipalities of the Metalliferous Hills, whose national park was created in 2003 to preserve the history of mining, once the source of life in these places. There are many routes to discover the ancient mining traces.
