Massa Marittima

Massa Marittima is a town of Etruscan and medieval origin and one of the most beautiful in Tuscany. It stands on a hill about 400 metres above sea level with a splendid panoramic view and is just 20 kilometres from the sea.

Protected by its well-preserved city walls, the historic center of Massa Marittima is an open-air museum. Piazza Garibaldi, the town's focal point, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is world famous for its splendid church, the Cathedral of San Cerbone and the many historic buildings that face it, from the Palazzo Comunale, to the Palazzo del Podestà, to the Loggia del Mercato.
A little further on, definitely not to be missed are the Palazzo della Zecca and the Fonte dell'Abbondanza, while in the upper town it is worth visiting the Torre del Candeliere, the town's most scenic point.

Massa Marittima owes its origins to mining. We are in fact in the territory of the metalliferous hills. As evidence of this, the Mining Museum, an interesting and entertaining itinerary, was born just outside the walls of the old town.
Not to be outdone are the surroundings of Massa Marittima. In the northern part, that of the colline metallifere, it is possible to enjoy numerous trails for trekking, horseback riding, biking or walking, while in nearby Monterotondo Marittima one cannot fail to be enraptured by the phenomenon of the Biancane.
Like many of the ancient Tuscan towns, Massa Marittima is divided into districts that come alive especially in the summer during the traditional festival of the "Balestro del Girifalco." A spectacle now known throughout the world.

Massa Marittima is a town rich in traditions, cultural events, first and foremost the important 'Lirica in Piazza' event, and gastronomic itineraries. There are numerous restaurants, wine cellars and "botteghe" (shops) in the old town centre where you can taste the typical products of this splendid land, first and foremost the Monteregio DOC wine, extra virgin olive oil, soups and cured meats.
