Grosseto

A medieval city, Grosseto is a small historic centre surrounded and cuddled by Medici walls that are still in perfect condition. It is the beating heart of historic commercial activities and social life.

In Grosseto you can take a walk through the narrow streets of the centre and breathe in the history of this city, have a coffee in the main Dante Alighieri square, where the Duomo, built between 1300 and 1700, stands proud and majestic, flanked by Palazzo Aldobrandeschi and its medieval architecture, which seem to guard and protect the statue of Canapone (Leopold II), representing the revenge and hope of the city and its inhabitants who managed to transform what was once a large swamp into one of the richest and most prosperous cities in southern Tuscany. Continuing your walk, you will arrive on the tree-lined avenues of the Medici walls, now a place for summer meetings and cultural events.

Grosseto is not only history and culture, but also unspoilt nature and breathtaking scenery. Known as the Maremma, it is the favourite tourist destination for those seeking contact with nature and for those who choose to lead a relaxed yet exciting life.

Grosseto is a city that doesn't force you to choose; if you love the sea, you'll have the most beautiful and famous beaches in central Italy within a few kilometres, such as the Costa d'Argento, with its sheer cliffs and photographic views. If you want to go horse-riding on the beach then you can choose the Maremma Park with beaches stretching from Principina a Mare to Talamone.

When you've had your fill of the coastal spectacle, you can visit the hinterland, with its fairytale landscapes. Whether you want to go and bathe in the warm waters of the Terme di Saturnia in Manciano, taste a good glass of Morellino in Scansano or visit the beautiful village of Magliano in Tuscany, the journey will be a rewarding and surprising experience, made up of dirt roads and glimpses of some of the noblest vineyards in Italy.
